Federal Furlough Generates Volunteer Interest  

We received some calls and emails from furloughed employees looking for ways to serve during this difficult time. While we all hope that the shutdown will soon be over our nonprofits have identifed some immediate short term opportunities to serve that we have listed here. You can also find date specific projects on our Calendar and opportunities marked as Occasional on our Advanced Search page.

Mental Health Association of Montgomery County Outreach

I would love to find volunteers who could help us do outreach to senior service centers, adult day care centers, senior housing centers to help us educate the community about our program.  A volunteer could help us do outreach to find long term volunteers who would be interested in visiting a lonely adult weekly for a minimum of one year.

Need help with preservation of documents and information. We have several file cabinets (ranging in contents from possibly the late 1800's, to the late 1980's) that need to be sorted through and scanned.  Volunteers should be over 18 and competent with basic computer functions.

Great and Small Lawn Care

Help us maintain our fences by removing overgrowth from the fence lines.  Weed-whacker and loppers are available on-site, or bring your own tools if you prefer.  Long sleeves and gloves recommended.

Outreach

Phone surveys to farms and restaurants to find out if they want to participate in a new food recovery initiative where we work to eliminate food waste by purchasing all end of market produce, cooking it up and redistributing it along with leftover restaurant foods we repackage for individual choice as food banks.

Volunteers are needed almost everyday to help facilitate the program.  The volunteer commitment is one day; 5 hours.  The first hour is spent in an orientation, providing all information that is needed for the day.  The remaining 4 hours is spent with the students; guiding them through the day.

Inputting survey data collected. We can accomodate up to 6 people doing data entry, using laptop computers at the MHP office. Shifts are available Monday thru Friday, from 10 am - 6 pm beginning October 7.

Donor database entry. This exercise would also require making telephone calls. Availability Monday through Friday, 9 am - 6 pm.

Help move Nourish Now.  We need help organizing food and furniture in the new space to maximize efficiency and workflow in our new space.  We can always use volunteers to help with the driving. Also we have a need for people to help inventory, repackage, and coordinate the final destination for food items received. There are a number of data entry, outreach, cleaning and other coordinating tasks for volunteers to assist with.
